Republished from The Times article January 2009 by Rachel Robinson
ONLY two hours from Cape Town, the picturesque town of Montagu is on the historic R62, the longest wine route in the world.
Take the N1 to Worcester, the follow the R60, a scenic wine- country drive which will take you through Robertson and Ashton and on to Montagu.
The rustic cottages are well equipped and beautifully furnished, complete with crisp white linen, fluffy towels and feather duvets. Each has a private veranda with views of the magnificent crags of kanoonkop.
For larger families there is also a luxury guest suit with its own lounge/dining area/kitchen.
The swimming pool offers respite from the heat of the day. The property is fully enclosed so children can play safely and they are welcome to get involved with the feeding of the rabbits, chickens and Punk, the Shetland Pony.
Well behaved dogs are welcome too.
The cottages are self catering and are well equipped. On the veranda you will find a built in braai. Montagu has plenty of charming coffee shops and many local pubs offer fine fare.
The Montagu country hotel is a good dinner option.
Much of what Montagu has to offer is on the doorstep of Rainbow Glen and details of all activities can be found at reception. It is a rock climbers Mecca and a hikers delight.
A stroll around the village is recommended – some of the houses date back to 1850’s.
Visit The Saturday morning market for home-baked goods and farm cheeses. Slightly further afield Montagu Tractor Trips will take you to the Summit of the Langeberg Mountains.
Enjoy a delicious Potjie lunch before or after your tractor ride.
